Restraints and Constraints? |
Every training has Restraints and Constraints: Restrictions are limitations we place on training to enhance the development potential of a skill. The more restraints applied, the more focus will be placed on an individual skill. The fewer restraints, the broader the development. Constraints are limitations beyond our immediate control (external). Constraints can usually be identified prior to the start of training and mitigated to minimize impact on training..
What? You might choose to limit the training to takedowns only, or maybe no contact only verbal, or mismatched weapons. Might not have the equipment for the desired training, or the weather is not cooperating.
Know them before you start? Try your best to identify all restraints and constraints early in the planning process to maximize the impact of the training.

Where did I first start to develop my understanding of training development? The Marines, for any fellow crayon eaters, you might be familiar with problem framing from the Marine Corps Planning Process. A lot of us were forced to do the MarineNet training, it was dumb. But the information was very valuable and has served me well to develop my own skills across many many subjects. Don't discount information even if the delivery was trash or misguided.
