Restraints?

Do you have Restraints: Self-imposed limitations that develop skill while training. They might be saying that no takedowns are allowed or using training knives, but no strikes. There are endless ways to establish limits on what can or can't be done during training.

Why? Restraints are useful and required to develop skill. Making a conscious choice on what type of limitation will impact what skill/skills becomes the focus. For example, if you want to improve grappling, adding weapons will split the focus between grappling and weapon management.

Keep this in mind? A good approach to skill building starts with a highly restrained drill, with subsequent drills removing more and more of those restraints until you are permitted to apply any and all possible skills.

Insiders Look at Shivworks

I am making this New letter on April 2. I have reviewed many real-world incidents and spent time in the comment section. It is hard not word vomit on people when they say dumb things. Sometimes I tell myself, they are just uninformed, but it's still a challenge. Yesterday, a friend of ours, who is a prosecutor, asked me to post his comments on a video. I did, then watched as the great unwashed tried to argue with a guy who made his comments while walking in to prosecute a lousy self-defense case. Dude, I am telling you sometimes it's a struggle.

What others are saying...

You have opened up a completely new path of study for me. I’m grateful for you instruction, as well as what I learned from the other students in the class. What I thought would be an atmosphere of competitiveness was instead an atmosphere of learning and cooperation.
